It is a fungus infection that can affect either males or females of all ages. Young children usually develop thrush much more than adults, however, adults can develop inflammation and discomfort from yeast infections in the mouth and lower genitals. The vaginitis form can affect males in their penis as well as women. Thrush and vaginitis are both very contagious illness. One should not let another child eat or drink after another one that has thrush; moreover, vaginitis can be contacted through sexual intercourse as well. If any person that has the vaginitis yeast infection (male or female), they should restrain from sex until it is cured.

Some of the causes of yeast infection could be a nutrient deficiency, mononucleosis, cancer treatments, and various types of medications, steroids, diabetes, a weak immune system, or a metabolic sickness.  Usually the good bacteria that inhabit our bodies can not fight the bad bacteria of the yeast infection.

There are ways to help prevent the vaginitis type of yeast infection. First you should not wear tight pants, or tight panty hose; also instead of wearing nylon underwear, people experiencing these symptoms, should wear cotton under underware. Women should avoid the use of douches, deodorized tampons, and feminine sprays. Another idea is not to use the scented toilet tissue, as these also can agitate the symptoms.

The symptoms can include severe itching and burning around the genital area in either sex. Home remedies such as douches and other items such as tampons can possibly irritate the infected area.  If you have any of these symptoms you should see a doctor as soon as possible. The doctor will take a swab sample, and then a culture is made to determine if it is yeast infection, or another form of sickness. Most of these symptoms can be treated with antibiotics prescribed by a physician. Some cases of yeast infection can hospitalize a person, and in a few cases death has occurred due to complications. If you have had a yeast infection at least 4 times in one year, you should consult a doctor.

Some treatments can be purchased over the counter, such as an antifungal tablet that can be swallowed or an antifungal cream, or a suppository.
